10 Bus Contingency Analysis in Power world

Step 1. Design a total of 16 scenarios by setting up n-1 contingency analysis.

Step 2. Via these scenarios, find the most problematic transmission line and strength the transmission network by adding line, conducting load curtailment, ramping up/down generator. (One new line added)

Step 3. After Step 2, Design a total of 17 scenarios by setting up another n-1 contingency analysis for new systems.

Step 4. Same as Step 2, strength system reliability through line network reinforcement for problematic scenarios.

Step 5. After Step 4, Design a total of 18 scenarios by setting up n-1 contingency analysis for newly strengthened system. In this case, there is no more line founded which has any issue.

Below scenarios show which violation it has, what action to improve system reliability has been done and what occurred after action had been taken.

In the end, the system can be operated stably by adding two new additional transmission lines and increasing the load limit of one line.


Scenario 14. Open Line Ten 138.0 (10) to Seven 138.0 (7)
Violation : One overloaded line observed between bus two and bus five.

Action to improve system reliability : Strengthen the transmission network by puttiong a line in service, two to five.
What happend? The newly added line relieved the burden of the existing line (70.7%).


Scenario 15. Open Line Eight 138.0 (8) to Nine 138.0 (9)
Violation : None, No overloaded line observed, but one line seems to be possible to be overloaded.

Action to improve system reliability : Load curtailment at bus five from 150MW to 100MW.
What happend? All lines being under safe condition.


Scenario 16. Open Line Eight 138.0 (8) to Nine 138.0 (9)
Violation : One line got overloaded, two to five (116.32%).

Action to improve system reliability : Adding a new transmission line between two and five.
What happend? Overload cleared.


Through 16 scenarios, it was able to find out that by adding a new line between bus two and five, it can clear most of overload issue. then, I added a new line between bus two and five and conducted additional contingency analysis with this system. In this case, there were three cases having overload issue.

Scenario 17. Open Line One 138.0 (1) to Two 138.0 (2)
Violation : One line got overloaded, two to five (149.75%).

Action to improve system reliability : Adding a new transmission line between one and three.
What happend? Overload cleared.

Scenario 18. Open Line One 138.0 (1) to Three 138.0 (3)
Violation : One line got overloaded, two to five (149.75%).

Action to improve system reliability : Adding a new transmission line between one and two.
What happend? Overload cleared.


Scenario 19. Open Line Eight 138.0 (8) to Six 138.0 (6)
Violation : Two lines got overloaded, one to two (111.86%) and eight to one (134.56%).

Action to improve system reliability : Strengthen the transmission network by increasing existing line MVA limit from 120MVA to 200MVA at the line located bus one and bus eight, also by adding a new line in service, one to two.
What happend? overloaded lines cleared.


In the additional three scenarios, I have added one new transmission line between bus one and abus two and increassted line limit from 120MVA to 200MVA at the line between bus one and bus eight. Also, considering that line two to five is the most overloaded line, the line limit at line A was increased to the 100MVA from 80MVA. Having this newly reinforced system condition, one more contingency analysis was conducted. Result showoed that there is no overload issue with reinforced system condition.
